At St Joseph's, we are proud to continue offering Yugambeh Language and Culture as a specialist subject for all students. Through this important learning area, students deepen their understanding of the rich language, histories, traditions and knowledge of the Yugambeh people, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and grow.

Our Language and Culture classes provide students with meaningful opportunities to engage with First Nations perspectives, build respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and develop a deeper connection to Country and community. Students continue to learn Yugambeh language through songs, stories, conversations, cultural experiences and classroom learning that celebrates the living culture of the Yugambeh people.

Research shows that learning an Aboriginal language and culture benefits all students. It strengthens cultural understanding, fosters a sense of belonging, and supports the development of respectful relationships within our school and wider community. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, it provides valuable opportunities to see their cultures, identities and histories recognised and celebrated.

As we continue this journey together, we look forward to sharing language, culture and community experiences throughout the year. We encourage families to keep an eye on our newsletters and social media channels for opportunities to learn alongside our students and celebrate the vibrant Yugambeh culture that has been nurtured and sustained on this land for tens of thousands of years.
